Due to the popularity of Data Science Festival events, we are now allocating event tickets via a random ballot.

Talk 1: The Busuu story, how we have built up our data science division from scratch in the last year and how it has helped us overcome big challenges within the company that would otherwise have been impossible.

Bio: Bruce Pannaman is a data scientist at busuu. Within his role, he responsible for curating, processing and modelling data to make busuu an even more effective for fun place to learn a language. Bruce has worked in ed-tech for 3 years and was working in insure-tech before this with some of the biggest brands in the UK. Apart from a brief spell of consulting and an engineering degree from the University of Nottingham, Bruce has entirely self-taught his data science skills from a passionate curiosity and exploration of his field as well as a variety of meet-ups, blogs and of course a really fun hackathon.

Talk 2: “Building a Data Science Capability at a Large Well-Established Corporate”

Abstract: This talk will cover the challenges, both technical and cultural, of building a data science team and capability in a large, global company. It will discuss best practices, lessons learned, and rewards of leveraging data effectively in the next frontier of data science: insurance.

Bio: Anna is an impact driven transformation expert with an MBA in strategic management and several professional qualifications across project management, change management, efficiency and data. A strong people leader with international exposure, who blends the newest approaches to business with tested techniques to deliver value.

Over the last 10 years she has worked with a variety of large and small organizations to increase their competitive advantage through operational excellence, cultural change and technology.

Currently Anna is building the data science team at QBE through implementing a scalable and agile operating model and a people centric engagement framework.
