Talk Abstract: Lessons learned from teaching Data Science.
The current shortage of talent in Data Science has led to the creation of a plethora of courses and workshops, both online and in-person — but are we reaching the right audience, and giving them the right skills to close the talent gap? Starting from an overview of the current educational landscape, the talk explores the (mis)match between course curricula and job requirements. This analysis is complemented by a few ‘lessons learned’ from my experience teaching Statistics and Data Science to hundreds of students and professionals in both academia and industry.
Workshop Abstract: From idea to data-driven product… in 4 hours. Data Science is not just about fitting models!
During the course of this hands-on workshop, we will build a proof-of-concept data-driven product from scratch. Leveraging Python’s wealth of open-source libraries, we will implement a Web scraper, develop a data cleaning and pre-processing pipeline, explore different machine learning models and evaluate their performance… and even develop an interactive Web interface for our users!
You will learn how to select the right tools for your data, and how to bring together different methods and technologies. Come experience first-hand how to tackle a data problem – from idea to delivery.
- Working knowledge of one or more programming languages (preferably including Python)
- Previous experience of data analysis is helpful, but not required
What to bring:
- A laptop with Python 3 and your choice of development environment
- Keenness to learn and share knowledge!
