At DSF we are lucky enough to have some very talented MCs who volunteer their time at our events, bringing their personality, warmth and expertise to the room. During our festivals, our MCs take centre stage, offering a helping hand to our speakers and keeping the show going both on and off stage. This interview provides a glimpse into the personal side of our MCs within our expanding community. Dive into the brief interview below!
A bit about Nadia:
Hi I’m Nadia and I currently work in the finance sector. I have used, developed and validated numerous models. Quite enjoy this.
I’m a travel enthusiast and enjoys hiking, discovering new places to sample new flavours. I also like my volunteering days at my local charity.
When did you MC for DSF?
In 2021, it was the first live event since Covid.
How many times have you been an MC and from what year?
Three times so far.
Why did you want to volunteer as an MC with DSF?
Originally, I registered to be a volunteer, I was just happy to give a pair of hand and support the community.
When they reached out asking if i would considered being an MC, I said yes without thinking too much and without necessarily knowing all the details.
A part of me wanted to challenge myself to go out a bit more of my comfort zone. Talking in front of people doesn’t necessarily comes naturally to me in these kind of settings. I wanted to « push myself » and give it a go. At the end, very glad I did it !
What is your favourite thing about being an MC?
There are quite a lot of things I like in this role but if I were to pick one or two thing I would say:
You are in charge of a room for the whole day and you can infuse your style when you manage the room. For instance, I quite like asking the audience to give a big cheers for the speakers, especially the first one of the day.
At the end of the day, it is nice to see that people have enjoyed their day and you helped this to happen….
And of course you always have a seat to listen to the talks …there were instances where the room was packed and we had to inform that unfortunately there were no available place. But that’s not a problem for you as you are an MC.
What advice would you give other people looking to MC at an event?
You will have a script but adapt it with your style- I tend to go through it with the speaker to make sure they are comfortable and in case there are some changes. Keep it light and don’t overload the audience before the talk starts.
Also, remember to take time to go outside, have some fresh air and enjoy some of the events between talks.
What is next for you?
Few things starting with revisiting a project around my cultural heritage that was stopped because of Covid.
Staying on top of what is happening on my work field and DSF is a great source of knowledge sharing.
And of course, if I can come an help as an MC or other roles, count me in!
Any final words?
Remember, as an MC you have a wayyyy easier role than the presenter , you are here to facilitate and make sure that everyone has fun! Jessica and the team are always available though they are crazy busy….so what not to like ?
Thank you to all our wonderful speakers for taking part in our MC Spotlight!
