At DSF we are lucky enough to have some very talented MCs who volunteer their time at our events, bringing their personality, warmth and expertise to the room. During our festivals, our MCs take centre stage, offering a helping hand to our speakers and keeping the show going both on and off stage. This interview provides a glimpse into the personal side of our MCs within our expanding community. Dive into the brief interview below!
A bit about Becki:
Hello, I’m Becki Wilson. I am MD & Creative Director of The Loft. I spend;
My days running a fast paced design agency, working with high growth, entrepreneurial brands.
My evenings running (I am currently training for 2 back to back marathons – I must be mad!).
And my weekends as a footy / hockey mum cheerleading my 2 boys, much to their embarrassment.
When did you MC for DSF?
Oktoberfest 2023
How many times have you been an MC and from what year?
This was my first time MC’ing
Why did you want to volunteer as an MC with DSF?
I love the work that DSF does to support the data community, it’s such a supportive and inclusive network. And having worked so closely with the team in recent years I was keen to get involved with an event and be part of the amazing team that bring it all to life! I’m also working on a personal goal to do more public speaking so the invite came at the perfect time!
What is your favourite thing about being an MC?
I really enjoyed getting to know each of the brilliant speakers in my room before the event.
I made sure I’d spoken to each of them, and I had a teams meeting with every speaker before hand so I could make sure their introduction to the stage was accurate, interesting and above all – personal!
What advice would you give other people looking to MC at an event?
Prep. As with all public speaking, lots of people will get nervous before heading into the spotlight! I found the key to helping me reduce (not eliminate though!!) some of the nerves was in the prep work. The calls and getting to know speakers beforehand definitely made a big difference and was then like meeting old friends on the day!
What is next for you?
Next up
In life – Complete my 2 marathons in April!
In career – Continue to ensure my team are happy. Clients are happy. And I plan to take on more public speaking gigs in the next 12 months! (MC’ing is a great intro to this!).
Any final words?
If you fancy giving MC’ing a go, I can highly recommend.
There is such a great vibe on the day. The team are all incredible. The events are SO GOOD.
Great fun, and lots to learn from everyone there.
Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers for taking part in our MC Spotlight!
