At DSF we are lucky enough to have some very talented MCs who volunteer their time at our events, bringing their personality, warmth and expertise to the room. During our festivals, our MCs take centre stage, offering a helping hand to our speakers and keeping the show going both on and off stage. This interview provides a glimpse into the personal side of our MCs within our expanding community. Dive into the brief interview below!
A bit about Adam:
My name is Adam Usmani. I’m currently a data scientist working for Bupa. I’ve been in the industry for a few years since graduating with a master’s degree in Big Data Technology. I would say my career switch from data analyst to data scientist was one of the best decisions that I have made. It has opened my eyes to such a diverse range of effective problem-solving techniques in the world of data. I feel like there is so much to learn within this area and every application of data science can be made just as interesting and exciting as one another.
When did you MC for DSF?
I MC’d for DSF in the 2024 MayDay event. This was the first time that I have ever been MC. It was a joy and a privilege to represent DSF.
How many times have you been an MC and from what year?
I have only been an MC once, but I would love to take on this responsibility again if DSF let me!
Why did you want to volunteer as an MC with DSF?
I wanted to volunteer to be an MC because of how much fun I have had attending previous events hosted by DSF. I have always loved all of the positive energy at these events and always thought that it would be great to contribute in some way.
What is your favourite thing about being an MC?
I really enjoy being in the spotlight and feeling the pressure of having to do something in front of lots of people. I love connecting with the crowd and putting my own blueprint on things. It can be quite thrilling to channel nervous energy. I am obsessed with self-improvement, and I think situations like these can contribute a lot to personal growth and development.
What advice would you give other people looking to MC at an event?
MCing is a lot more than just talking to an audience and introducing speakers. As an MC you need to stay focused on the job at hand because there can be many things that can throw you off. Luckily my experience as an MC at DSF was very smooth and problem free. I would say that you need to be prepared for anything to happen. There can be technical issues, rude people in the audience, timing problems and more. My advice would be to do your homework prior to MCing. DSF provides you with a script and gives you very detailed instructions on what’s expected of you as an MC. Spend a lot of time prior to an event becoming extremely familiar with all these things because the worst thing you can do is be unprepared when you arrive on the day.
What is next for you?
I am getting married in September, so my focus is on wedding preparation now. It’s incredible how many things there are to consider when preparing for a wedding ceremony. I feel like it’s harder than any project that I have done at work. In terms of my job, I’m very settled at Bupa as a data scientist. I’m working on some interesting projects, and I am happy with the ambition that Bupa has been showing in finding ways to make more use of data science across the company. I would love a promotion or pay rise at some point soon. Once I get married, I’ll want to start house hunting and spending money on nice holidays with my wife. It’s really no joke living in London.
Any final words?
I love DSF. I don’t know what more I can say. It’s just been so fun, and it’s made me so grateful to be a data scientist.
Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers for taking part in our MC Spotlight!
