Data scientists must be able to think like a statistician, a scientist, a customer, and a software developer, sometimes in the same meeting! This is especially true in organisations where data science is a new function, which is most organisations. The need for this capability is clear, so why is it hard to provide it? In this talk we discuss a two-pronged approach – how organisations need to change to accommodate data science, and how data science education needs to change to make data scientists better equipped for the real world.
