Toby learned to play Go when he was still at school in the 1960’s but it was when he went to Cambridge University in 1971 that he got really keen on the game. Since then he has played it all his life, reaching the level of 3 dan (master grade) some 25 years later.
He joined the Council of the British Go Associatiton, the game’s governing body in the UK, in 2008, becoming Treasurer in 2011 and President in 2018.
He acted as Referee during the match between AlphaGo and Fan Hui in 2015, made famous in the film “AlphaGo”.
Toby is a retired electrical engineer, married with no children.
