Sometimes we forget the humans behind the tech in our ever busy world. DSF is fortunate enough to know some incredible tech leaders across the world and has the privilege of hearing them present at our events. That being said, our Speaker Spotlight sets the stage to get to know our speakers on a more personal level and connect them with our growing community. Read the mini interview below!

A bit about Michelle:

Michelle is a full-stack data scientist with extensive experience in retail, insurance, finance, telecommunications, and IT consulting. As a Senior Manager and Lead Data Scientist at Lloyds Banking Group, she leads a high-performance MLOps team, transforming data into strategic decisions and creating impactful data products. With over 12 years of experience deploying machine learning models into production, Michelle combines technical prowess with a passion for community building. She is an ambassador for Women in Data and was recognised on the Women in Data ‘Twenty in Data & Tech 2023’ list. Originally from Ireland and now based in London, Michelle enjoys the city’s vibrant culture and artwork.

How did you start out in your tech career?

I pursued a degree in mathematical science at University College Dublin, where I fell in love with statistics due to its problem-solving and creative data visualisations. After graduating, I joined a graduate program with First Derivatives PLC, analyzing investment banking data in London using SQL. I worked as a statistician for various companies, building and deploying statistical models.

Later, I completed a Master’s degree in Data Science at Birkbeck University London while working full-time. This helped me learn Python, leading to a data scientist role at Lloyds Banking Group (LBG). Over six years at LBG, I was promoted to lead data scientist, training graduates and working on machine learning projects using agile and DevOps techniques.

What are the signs of success in your field?

Success in the data science field within an MLOps team is marked by an excellent relationship with business stakeholders who are invested in and benefit from data science models, ensuring these models positively impact business outcomes. Passing governance and maintaining models in live production environments demonstrate operational robustness and compliance. Additionally, staying updated with the latest technologies, cloud services, and Python packages reflects the team’s commitment to innovation and technical excellence, further contributing to successful and sustainable data science initiatives.

What can you advise someone just starting out to be successful?

Learn continuously and stay updated with the latest technologies and trends.
Build projects and gain practical experience by working on real-world projects.
Network and connect with professionals in the field to learn from their experiences.

Embrace failure and learn from mistakes and persist through challenges. Remember to fail is taking the first attempt in learning!

How do you switch off?

In my free time, I enjoy a variety of activities that help me switch off and relax. I’m an art enthusiast and a member of the Tate, where I love exploring contemporary and classic art exhibitions. Additionally, I’m a big fan of the gym, with a particular interest in strength training and aerial yoga, which help me stay fit and centered. I also practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which not only keeps me physically active but also sharpens my mental focus and discipline. These activities provide a perfect balance of relaxation, physical exertion, and mental engagement for me.

What advice would you give your younger self?

If I could give advice to my younger self, it would be to embrace patience and persistence. Life’s journey often requires enduring challenges and setbacks, and success rarely comes overnight. Stay curious and never stop learning, as continuous growth is key to both personal and professional fulfillment. Additionally, prioritize building strong relationships and networks; the support and insights from others can be invaluable. Finally, don’t be afraid to take calculated risks and step out of your comfort zone—this is where the most significant growth happens.

What is next for you?

Career-wise, I was promoted 18 months ago to lead Data Scientist, and I’m really enjoying my role. It’s both rewarding and challenging, providing me with numerous opportunities to grow and develop my skills. My immediate goal is to continue mastering senior management skills, with the ultimate ambition of owning my own data science portfolio and heading a team responsibly and innovatively. For now, I’m happy as a tech lead because it allows me to stay hands-on with coding, which I find incredibly fulfilling.

What are your top 5 predictions in tech for the next 5 years?

I see an increased integration of AI in various industries, leading to more efficient processes and new job roles.

There will be significant advancements in quantum computing, solving complex problems faster than traditional computers.

An expansion of 5G networks, enabling faster and more reliable internet connectivity, and paving the way for new technologies.

A big enhanced focus on cybersecurity due to the growing number of cyber threats and the importance of protecting data.

There will be a greater emphasis on developing technologies that promote sustainability and reduce environmental impact.
